Jerry Deutsch - President
Jerry
Deutsch has been a member of the NHA for over 20 years. He
has been a Life member for over 10 years. He has served as
a member of the Board of Directors for two terms in the late
1980s and early 1990s and rejoined the Board in 2005.
Jerry completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell
University in Human Development and Family Studies and did
his graduate work at Purdue University in Child Development
and at The University of Denmark in Developmental
Psychology.
In 1975, Jerry joined his family's retail jewelry business.
He soon became president of the company and owned and
operated jewelry stores and Hallmark card and gift shops.
Over the years he oversaw the building, opening and
operating of over 20 stores.
For many years Jerry has studied numerous aspects of
health, diet, and nutrition. He married in 1984 and before
the birth of his first child in 1986, health became his
passion. Wanting to be the most knowledgeable parent
he could be, he began to research various aspects of
children's health and came upon the theory of Natural
Hygiene. Over the years, the principles and practices
of Natural Hygiene have had a profound influence on him and
his family and community. He has empowered many people
to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Jerry and his wife Lynne live in Old Brookville, New York,
with their daughters Hallie (aged 3) and Carrie (age 17).
His eldest daughter Lea (age 20) is a sophomore at
Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Jerry is now
semi-retired and in his free time is a wheatgrass and sprout
farmer, a business coach and real estate developer.

Jeff Novick, M.S., R.D., L.D./N. -
Vice President
Jeff Novick, M.S., R.D., L.D./N., is the director of nutrition
at the world-renowned Florida's Pritikin Center in Aventura, Florida
where he helps people make the transition to healthful eating. He
holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana State
University in nutrition with minors in Exercise Science.
Jeff has taught classes in nutrition at Indiana State University,
Indiana University Medical School, and at the University of
Miami Medical School. While in Indiana, he developed and taught
the Nutrition Education Initiative, a nutrition and preventative
medical curriculum for medical doctors, residents, and medical
students. In recognition of this groundbreaking project, he
was awarded the Indiana State Public Health Excellence in
Health Science Award.
Jeff serves as vice president on the Board of Directors for
the National Health Association and writes for Health Science
magazine, the membership journal of the NHA. He is frequently
quoted on nutrition topics in a wide range of popular health
magazines.

Mark Alan Epstein - Treasurer
Mark Alan Epstein is the President of the Flow group of companies.
Mark is a computer scientist who has been in the investment management
and technology industries for almost 20 years. After receiving a
B.S. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Computer Science from The University
of Chicago, Mark began designing and implementing a variety of technical
trading and risk-management systems to price and trade derivatives
portfolios. From 1993 to 1996, he was the Director of Research and
Technology for an options market making group with traders in Chicago,
London and Frankfurt.
Mark founded the Flow group of companies in 1996 to provide
technology and trading consulting services. Flow has managed
private assets in hedge funds, and trades their own in-house
proprietary accounts. In the art world, he developed Café
Voltaire in 1990, a natural foods restaurant, performance
space theatre, and art gallery in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.
Later, he created Flow Arts to support independent film, theatre,
and musical productions.
With a commitment to health and the environment, Mark serves
on the boards of Sustain, EarthSave International, and the
National Health Association. Currently residing in Chicago,
he is an avid philatelist, plays the saxophones, and enjoys
squash, racquetball, golf, bowling, and vegetarian cooking.
And, most importantly, he's working on his organic vegetable
garden and fruit orchard in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

John Nowakowski - Secretary

At the age of
fifteen, John Nowakowski started cooking in local restaurants
and clubs in Baltimore, Maryland. The various cooking methods
and food presentations fascinated him as he rose to the
challenge of turning out dishes that were not only pleasing to
the eye but a treat for the palette as well. The results were
totally imaginative productions of contrasting textures and
color. It was no surprise that by the age of 24, he became the
youngest executive chef in the Marriott Corporation. From 1978
to 1989, John traveled the country troubleshooting and
participating in the grand openings of award-winning Marriott
Hotels. In 1986, he had the good fortune to train under Roger
Verges at his highly renowned restaurant, Moulin de Mougins, in
southern France.
In 1989,
John joined hands with the Trusthouse Forte Corporation at Pi’s
Place Restaurant in Miami. It was there that a “Heart Healthy
Menu” was created with exciting low-fat, low-sodium, and
low-cholesterol menu items, using the freshest local products
available. Pi’s Place went on to win “The Best Restaurant Award”
in downtown Miami for consecutive years.
In 1995 he
joined the Regency House Natural Health Spa in Hallandale,
Florida, as executive chef. He also teaches monthly classes at
Nutrition Smart Health Food Stores and has also given food
demonstrations at Whole Foods Markets, Borders, and Barnes and
Nobles.
John has
contributed his expertise and recipes to the National Health
Association annual Conferences since 1997. He is the author of
the book Vegetarian Magic and a DVD Cooking with Tofu (both
available from the NHA). He is working on a third book.
He has
developed a line of vegan cookies called Nowakowski’s Cookies,
which will be in your local stores soon. He recently signed on
with Boca Burgers as a national spokesman for their vegetarian

John has
been featured in many publications and is a regular contributor
to Health Science magazine. He has cooked for a host of
celebrities…Alice Cooper, Emeril Lagasse, Michael Douglas,
Catherine Bach and the Village People, to name a few.
He became
the proud father of John Christopher who was born on July 17,
2003.

Joel Fuhrman, M.D. - Board Member
Joel Fuhrman, M.D., is a board-certified family physician in private
practice in Flemington, New Jersey, who specializes in preventing
and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. He
is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
and is an active staff member of Hunterdon Medical Center. Dr. Fuhrman
provides nutritionally oriented medical care to patients as well
as nutritional education to other physicians. As a former member
of the US World Figure Skating Team, Dr. Fuhrman also has a strong
interest in fitness and sports medicine.
As an expert on nutrition and natural healing, Dr. Fuhrman
has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows including,
Good Morning America, CNN, Good Day NY and many more.
Dr. Fuhrman's unique expertise has enabled thousand of patients
to achieve recovery from what are usually considered chronic
irreversible illnesses. These include most chronic illnesses
such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, angina, coronary
artery disease, fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, and high
blood pressure, as well as many other autoimmune diseases
such as lupus and inflammatory bowel disease. He is also known
for his success in having his patients lose dramatic amounts

Alan Goldhamer, D.C. - Board Member
Alan Goldhamer, D.C., is a chiropractor and director of the TrueNorth
Health Clinic in Penngrove, California, a multi-discipline outpatient
clinic and in-patient residential health care program specializing
in medically supervised water-only fasting.
He is a graduate of Western States Chiropractic College.
He is board certified in fasting supervision and a member
of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians.
Dr. Goldhamer is the author of the Health Promoting Cookbook as
well as numerous articles which have appeared in Health Science
magazine. He was also the principle investigator of two scientific
studies, "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment
of Hypertension," published in the July 2002 issue of the Journal
of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics and "Medically Supervised
Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Borderline Hypertension"
published in the October 2002 issue of the Journal of Alternative
and Complimentary Medicine.
Dr. Goldhamer has served as an adjunct faculty member at
Bastyr University in the Department of Naturopathic Medicine
where he has taught courses on fasting and health. He has
also lectured on fasting at Cornell University, Western States
Chiropractic College and Life Chiropractic College. He is
a regular speaker on the use of fasting and vegan diets for
the National Health Association, North American Vegetarian
Association, North American Vegan Society, San Francisco Vegetarian
Society and Canadian Natural Health Society.

Mark Huberman - Board Member
Mark Huberman has been a strict vegan vegetarian for all of his
52 years, and credits his excellent health to the Sheltonian diet
upon which he was raised. He literally grew up with the Association,
having attended his first annual conference with his parents Max
and Ruth Huberman, in 1964 when he was 13 years old. He began his
service to the NHA (then called the ANHS) as a national Board Member
at age 18, and has served the Association for the past 29 years
on just about every level.
He was elected the Association's youngest President in 1977
and served two consecutive two-year terms. He returned to
serve two terms as President in the mid-1990's and currently
serves as a Member of the Executive Committee.
In 1978, Mark helped organize the International Association
of Hygienic Physicians and continues to serve as its Secretary-Treasurer.
Outside of his work for the NHA, he is currently serving
his 7th year as Chief Magistrate and Court Administrator of
the Mahoning County Domestic Relations Court. Prior to that he
was in the private practice of law for over 20 years, 10 of
which were as a Part-Time Referee-Magistrate of his local
Juvenile Court. Mark is also currently serving as President of
his Local Board of Education, a position to which he was
elected 20 years ago. He was recently elected President of the
Ohio Association of Magistrates.
Mark loves sports, the theater and, in the Summer time, his
organic garden! He and his wife Wanda are the proud parents
of daughters, Heather, a Sophomore at Youngstown State University,
and Lisa, a Junior at Boardman High School, who are both Century
Club Members of the NHA.

Barbara Ferguson Kennedy - Board Member
Barbara
Ferguson Kennedy gained extensive experience while employed as a
journalist and editorial administrator for several national and
international newspapers and magazines. Working the last 24 years as
a journalist and bureau chief in Paris, London and now Washington,
she has developed an expertise on Middle East affairs. She speaks
French and Arabic.
She currently is the Washington Bureau Chief of Arab
News, the leading English-language daily in the Middle
East, headquartered in London with its editorial staff based
in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Barbara has also served as a regional expert for the
Washington Times, writing "Country Reports" from Bahrain,
Morocco and Kazakhstan. Each report required her to reside a
minimum of two months in each country.
She was an embedded war correspondent with Marine
Expeditionary Force 1, 3MAW, during the Iraq War in Spring 2003.
At the request of General James Amos, Commanding General 3rd
MAW, under whom she was embedded, Barbara has regularly trained
Marines being redeployed to Iraq on "Arab Culture and Islam."
Barbara has received several journalism awards including the
"Outstanding Support Award, U.S. Intelligence and Threat
Analysis Center, The Pentagon" for her help during Gulf War I.
She was born in Essex, Connecticut, and is married to Tim
Kennedy. She attended Colorado Women's College and graduated
from the University of Minnesota. She did graduate work at the
Sorbonne University, Paris, France, where she learned Arabic.
She was a technical researcher at UNESCO before starting her
career as a journalist in 1980, and worked in Paris for 16 years
before being transferred to London, England, where she continued
her career in journalism from 1988-1990.
Barbara is co-Chair of the International Correspondents
Committee at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C., and was
selected for Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. A
speaker in her field, she appears regularly on national and
international television.
