 T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., respected nutrition and health researcher, is keynote speaker at the NHA 2007 Conference
Dr. T. Colin Campbell gave a brilliant lecture at the 2007 NHA Conference titled “Health Care Means Nutrition Care, Not Disease Care.” The National Health Association wanted as many people as possible to hear his inspiring lecture, so we invited people living in the South Florida area to join NHA Conference attendees for this event.
Dr. Campbell began his lecture by stating that, “What you choose to put into your mouth makes a difference. It makes a lot more of a difference than the pills you might have to take because you decided to choose the wrong kinds of food.”
When Dr. Campbell spoke about a plant-based diet he emphasized the idea of whole, unprocessed vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes and nuts — with little or nothing added in the way of salt, sugar, and fat —which, he stated, “gets us into so much trouble.”
It is interesting to note that Dr. Campbell grew up on a dairy farm. He did his doctoral dissertation in animal science, trying to develop more productive ways to produce more cows and sheep. Later he would assist in a project in the Philippines to develop a program to feed malnourished children — to make sure that children were getting as much protein as possible. However, during this project he discovered that children who ate the highest-protein diets were the ones most likely to get liver cancer.
He began an in-depth laboratory program to investigate the role of nutrition, especially protein. He went on to direct the most comprehensive study of diet, lifestyle and disease ever done — the China Study. The research project, and now his book, culminates a 20-year partnership of Cornell University, Oxford University and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine regarding diseases and lifestyle factors in rural China and Taiwan. The findings showed that people who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease.
During his lecture, Dr. Campbell covered topics such as osteoporosis and dairy consumption. “We have been told for many years that for strong bones and teeth, drink your milk. We have been hearing that since we were kids,” said Dr. Campbell. He quoted studies between the relationship of cow’s milk consumption and osteoporosis which found the higher the dairy intake, the higher the osteoporosis rates.
When Dr. Campbell’s lecture was over, people stood in line not only to purchase autographed copies of The China Study and his lecture on CD, but to become members of the National Health Association.
A big welcome to all new members of the NHA!
