The Real Culprits Behind Poor Posture and Pain: A Conversation with Eileen Kopsaftis
Welcome to NHA Today, the official podcast of the National Health Association. In this episode, guest host Cyd Notter welcomes chronic pain expert, seasoned educator, and bestselling author Eileen Kopsaftis. With more than three decades of experience helping people move better and age well, Eileen brings clarity, compassion, and science-backed solutions to one of the most misunderstood health issues: posture.
Whether you struggle with chronic pain, forward head posture, mobility issues, or the fear of aging decline, Eileen offers a hopeful message: you are not destined to fall apart with age, and posture is a powerful starting point for restoring function.
Why Posture Matters More Than People Think
Contrary to popular belief, posture is not just about appearance. Eileen explains that posture affects how we move, how we feel, how we breathe, how we digest, and whether we remain stable and balanced throughout our lives.
When the head sits forward even by one inch, it adds roughly 10 additional pounds of force to the neck and upper back. Over time, this leads to pain, fatigue, headaches, limited shoulder mobility, and reduced respiratory function.
While some claim posture is overrated, Eileen has seen firsthand that proper alignment dramatically reduces pain and enhances quality of life.
Aging Doesn’t Shrink Us, Impaired Circulation Does
Many people believe that “shrinking” with age is inevitable, but Eileen corrects this misconception. Height loss typically results from:
- Forward posture
- Impaired circulation to the spinal discs
- Muscle weakness
- Old injuries that changed the body’s mechanics
Eileen highlights groundbreaking research showing that degenerative disc disease is a circulation issue, not an aging issue.
If the arteries supplying the lumbar spine become compromised, often due to lifestyle and diet, discs lose hydration and integrity. Restoring circulation is possible, and many people see pain improve when they adopt a whole food, plant-based lifestyle.
The Three Hidden Areas Most People Ignore
To truly improve posture, Eileen says we must address the three most commonly overlooked regions:
1. The Ankles
Perhaps the biggest surprise: limited ankle mobility often forces the entire body to compensate, pushing the head forward and disrupting balance. Many people lack dorsiflexion due to old injuries or years of inactivity.
2. The Hips
Tight hip flexors from prolonged sitting create a constant forward pull on the spine, making it impossible to stand upright without strain.
3. The Thoracic Spine (Upper Back)
Eileen calls it the “silent saboteur.” The thoracic spine must rotate and side-bend in two different patterns (type 1 and type 2 motion). Without this mobility, the shoulders, neck, and lower back all suffer.
Strengthening and mobilizing these three regions can dramatically change posture even for people in their 80s or 90s.
Why Braces Don’t Help
Eileen warns that posture braces often make the situation worse. When external support holds you up, the muscles responsible for posture weaken and adapt, causing greater dysfunction when the brace comes off.
The solution is training the body, not propping it up.
How to Assess Your Posture at Home
Eileen walks listeners through a simple wall test and a lying-down test to reveal:
- Whether the head is too far forward
- If the shoulder blades lie flat
- Whether the lumbar and thoracic curves are balanced
- If the pelvis is tilted
- Whether the thighs bear proper weight in lying position
These simple assessments help people identify where their body needs support and change.
Movement as Medicine
Eileen emphasizes that the body is designed to move in three planes: forward/backward, side-to-side, and rotation. Training in only one plane is insufficient for full mobility and pain-free living.
Her programs use whole-body, three-plane movement to restore normal function, improve balance, and reduce pain.
She also highlights the importance of:
- Whole food, plant-based nutrition for improved circulation
- Proper hydration
- Avoiding long periods of immobility
- Conscious sitting posture (including her simple “anterior tilt” technique)
Aging Without Decline
Eileen ends with a hopeful message:
“Common does not mean normal. We are not destined to decline.”
She has worked with people well into their 90s, and even past 100, who regained mobility, improved posture, and dramatically reduced pain when they learned how to move correctly.
It is never too late to start.
