The National Health Association proudly honors the legacy and vision of its past leaders—extraordinary individuals whose dedication laid the groundwork for our enduring mission: to promote whole-food, plant-based nutrition and healthy lifestyle practices. These trailblazers led the Association through critical periods of growth and transformation, inspiring generations to pursue better health through education, advocacy, and personal example.

With unwavering commitment, compassionate leadership, and tireless advocacy, they helped shape the core values that define the NHA today. Through public speaking, writing, and grassroots outreach, they expanded public awareness of preventive health and empowered individuals to take charge of their well-being.

We celebrate and remember each of these leaders not only for their accomplishments but for the profound and lasting impact they have had on the lives of countless people. Their legacy continues to guide and inspire our work today.


Gladys and Joe Aaron

Gladys co-founded the Canadian Natural Hygiene Society and earned recognition as a Senior Fitness Leader for contributions to health promotion. Joe Co-founded and served as Director of the Toronto Chapter, later holding roles as ANHS Director, NH Press Sales Representative, and Lecturer. Both were very active at the conferences and frequently presented.

Dorothy Brosious

She served on the Board of Directors of the American Natural Hygiene Society and was the wife of John Brosious. As director, she assisted her husband in operating their fasting establishment in St. Petersburg, Florida. She also participated in a pre-teen workshop on how plants provide nutritious food and demonstrated food preparation for adults at the 1974 Convention. She was continually active, either presenting or behind the scenes at the conferences.

Delores Burns

She served as the head of the Natural Hygiene School in Chicago, where she developed courses in emotional development, speech improvement, body strengthening, and weight training for both women and men. She held the position of Executive Secretary for both the Chicago Chapter of the American Natural Hygiene Society and the national ANHS, and she was a former editor of Natural Hygiene News. She served on the Board of Directors of the ANHS and contributed articles to Natural Hygiene News.

Gerry and Ray Coffey

Fitness and nutrition advisors Gerry and her husband, Ray, taught Healthy Alternatives classes, published a newsletter, and conducted Learn-To-Live weekends. Gerry, a former health educator at a major metropolitan hospital, faced a life-threatening ovarian cyst after being prescribed Premarin, but through extensive research and collaboration with leading natural health practitioners, she restored her health through fasting and nutrition. Ray also experienced significant improvements, overcoming chronic sinus and prostate issues. Together, they shared their belief that true wealth lies in health and dedicated themselves to helping others achieve it.

Don served as President of the Montreal chapter of the American Natural Hygiene Society, contributed to the development of educational materials on natural hygiene for young people, and served on the Society’s Board of Directors. He was also a contributing author to Health Science magazine.

Harvey and Marilyn Diamond

Harvey and Marilyn Diamond were pioneering health educators, bestselling authors, and dynamic speakers whose Fit for Life books inspired millions around the world to embrace healthier, more natural lifestyles. Their message—rooted in the principles of Natural Hygiene—brought fundamental concepts of nutrition, food combining, and wellness into the mainstream with an approach that was practical, motivating, and accessible to the general public. First published in 1985, Fit for Life became a #1 New York Times bestseller and introduced countless readers to the idea that vibrant health could be achieved through natural living and conscious lifestyle choices.

Harvey Diamond was also the author of You Can Prevent Breast Cancer! and Your Heart—Your Planet, as well as coauthor of Fit for Life II: Living Health. Together, Harvey and Marilyn became extraordinarily charismatic ambassadors for the health movement, captivating audiences with their warmth, humor, and passion. Their appearances at NHA Conferences were consistently among the most popular and well-attended events, helping to energize and expand the organization. Through the success of Fit for Life, the Diamonds introduced thousands of readers to the NHA, contributing to a dramatic growth in membership and awareness of Natural Hygiene principles.

Marilyn Diamond later continued this mission through Fitonics, developed in partnership with Don Schnell in Sarasota, Florida, further advancing their shared commitment to vibrant health, personal empowerment, and natural living.

Jay Dinshah

H. Jay Dinshah was widely regarded as the father of the modern vegan movement in the United States and was a lifelong advocate for compassion, nonviolence, and natural living. In 1960, he founded the American Vegan Society, through which he published influential books and a widely read magazine while passionately promoting the principles of veganism and Ahimsa—the Sanskrit philosophy of non-killing, non-injuring, and non-harming. A gifted speaker and tireless educator, Jay lectured extensively on nonviolence and humane living, helping to bring vegan ideals into the public consciousness long before they became mainstream.

Jay also played a vital leadership role within the American Natural Hygiene Society. He served on the ANHS Board of Directors during the late 1970s and early 1980s and was instrumental during a pivotal period in the organization’s history, serving as interim Executive Director as the NHA relocated its headquarters from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Tampa, Florida in 1984. In addition, he served as Third Vice President and Chair of the Expansion Department, contributing significantly to the Society’s growth and outreach efforts. A frequent and engaging speaker at NHA conventions for many years, Jay inspired countless individuals through his warmth, intellect, and unwavering commitment to a more compassionate and healthful world. He passed away on June 8, 2000 at age 66.

Lois Felder

Lois Felder was a devoted and generous volunteer whose steady presence helped shape the success of ANHS/NHA conferences over many years. Always willing to step in wherever needed, she supported everything from registration and hospitality to behind-the-scenes coordination, ensuring each event ran smoothly and attendees felt welcome and cared for. Her warmth, reliability, and quiet dedication made her an invaluable part of the conference community, and her contributions left a lasting impression on both participants and fellow volunteers alike.


T.C. Fry

He served as Third Vice President of the ANHS Board and acted as Publicist for the New York Regional Conference in 1973. He was also a frequent speaker for the New York City ANHS Chapter. The husband of Helen Fry, he authored the Program for Dynamic Health and later served as editor of the Healthway Advisor.

Bob and Erwin Goodman

Irwin Goodman and Robert Goodman were successful businessmen in Madison, Wisconsin, where they funded many large-scale health and sports projects. Irwin and Robert were accomplished collegiate athletes, and they were major supporters of intercollegiate sports at the University of Wisconsin. Robert was a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The Goodmans were Life members of and major contributors to the National Health Association in the 1990s. They were instrumental in the Association’s adoption of a more formal and scientific approach to its educational efforts. Their gifts made many NHA projects possible, and they actively encouraged other members to increase their financial contributions. In addition to attending the NHA Conference, the Goodmans frequently travelled to Australia to spend time with their friends, Drs. Alec and Nejla Burton, at the Arcadia Health Center. Dr. Alec Burton was the longtime president of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians.



Joy Jacaruso Gross

Joy Gross’s journey to health began in her teenage years when she overcame severe acne and psoriasis by adopting the principles of Natural Hygiene, an experience that shaped her lifelong commitment to health education. Alongside her husband, Robert Gross, she co-founded and directed the renowned Pawling Health Manor in New York for over 40 years, gaining national recognition for their work and appearing in books, magazines, radio, and television.

A pioneer in the field since the 1950s, Joy attended her first ANHS conference in 1955 and went on to serve the Society in numerous leadership roles, including Board member, Secretary-Treasurer, Convention Program Chair, and Executive Committee member. She was a prolific writer and editor, contributing to The Hygienic Review, Health Science, and other publications, and authored several influential books, including The 30-Day Way to a Born-Again Body, The Vegetarian Child, and Joy’s Recipes for Living Younger… Longer!, helping advance the principles of Natural Hygiene for decades. She was a frequent presenter at the conferences, creating amazing food masterpieces!

James Hervey Johnson

James Hervey Johnson was an editor, author, and dedicated advocate of natural health, particularly the principles of Natural Hygiene. He invested his business earnings in real estate and the stock market, using his success to support and promote his lifelong commitment to natural health.

Johnson served as Convention Manager for the 15th Annual Convention in 1963 at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego and was also President of the highly active San Diego Chapter.

Following his passing in 1988, the James Hervey Johnson Charitable and Educational Trust was established to support organizations aligned with his health philosophy. The NHA has been a grateful recipient of many substantial grants from the Trust, helping to advance our mission. Sophia Holzgreen

Sophie was a legendary member of the NHA who worked tirelessly for more than 40 years to promote Natural Hygiene in Los Angeles. She served on the ANHS Board of Directors and was a former President of the ANHS Los Angeles Natural Hygiene Society chapter. In 1985, she was presented with a service award from the board for her decades of service which included keeping L.A. area health food stores well-stocked with ANHS books, especially Fasting Can Save Your Life. She was the wife of Harold Holzgreen, who also attended the conferences with Sophia and helped out behind the scenes. She passed away on December 30, 2000 at age 94. Max and Ruth Huberman

Max served on the ANHS Board of Directors and was a former Vice President of the Standards Committee of the National Nutritional Foods Association. He was also a member of the American Natural Hygiene Society of Youngstown and a contributing author to Health Science magazine. He was the husband of Ruth and the father of Mark and Jeff Huberman. He is featured in Health Science Magazine from June 1978.

Ruth was a leading hygienist in Youngstown, Ohio, whose understanding and knowledge of natural hygiene served as a valuable guide to health achievement. She raised two children using natural hygiene methods and developed the skill of gently introducing hygienic principles to those initially resistant to them. She also helped operate a business specializing in organic foods and was recognized as an authority in the field. She was the wife of Max Huberman and the mother of Mark and Jeff.

Frieda Kabelack-Ireland

She served as a former Vice President of the ANHS and as Vice President of the ANHS Tallahassee Chapter. A dedicated health activist, she coordinated chapter activities for the American Natural Hygiene Society and later served as National Director and Convention Program Chairperson. Florence and Harry Kaplan

Florence was an active member of the Cincinnati ANHS Chapter, where she served as President and later became a Life Member. A longtime participant in the hygienic movement, she brought remarkable artistic talent to natural hygiene, creatively transforming natural foods into works of expression that she shared through demonstrations. Harry accompanied her to conferences and provided valuable behind-the-scenes support.

Mamiko Matsuda

Mamiko Matsuda, PhD, a best-selling author, translator, and nutritional expert who divides her time between Japan and Houston, overcame serious early health challenges. She became a dedicated advocate for natural hygiene and plant-based nutrition, sharing these principles through her writing and educational work.

She maintained a strong connection with the National Health Association, contributing as a speaker, educator, and supporter of its mission to promote health through natural living. Through her international outreach, she helped extend the influence of Natural Hygiene to a broader global audience.


Victoria Moran

She is an American author and speaker who has written numerous books focusing on spirituality and veganism. Moran hosted the Main Street Vegan radio show and podcast on Unity Online Radio, and her book Main Street Vegan served as the foundation for her broader outreach efforts, including the Main Street Vegan Podcast, Main Street Vegan Academy, and Main Street Vegan Productions. She is also a contributing author to the Health Science Magazine.

Helen and Scott Nearing

Scott and Helen Nearing were co-authors of Living the Good Life and were widely regarded as America’s most celebrated homesteaders. For more than fifty years, they lived in harmony with nature, growing their own food, cutting firewood for fuel, and constructing their large stone home by hand. Scott Nearing was an eminent economist, radical thinker, and devoted Tolstoyan vegetarian, and together they became enduring symbols of a purposeful and self-sufficient life. Featured in an article from Health Science Dec 1979.

Jeff Novick, R.D.

He taught nutrition at Indiana University, the University of Miami School of Medicine, and the Indiana State University School of Medicine. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Health Association and wrote extensively for Health Science magazine on a wide range of topics. He also held the position of Director of Health Education for the National Health Association and served as nutritionist and dietitian for the McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, California. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Nutrition at the Pritikin Center in Aventura, Florida. Jeff was highly active at conferences and frequently delivered presentations.

Dan and Trudy Regan

Life member Dan Regan was a highly successful businessman and accomplished photographer when he was first introduced to the NHA, an experience that profoundly transformed the course of his life. Inspired by the principles of Natural Hygiene and healthful living, Dan quickly became one of the Association’s most dedicated and valued supporters, playing an important role in its growth and development for many years.

His contributions to the NHA were extensive and deeply appreciated. In addition to being a generous financial supporter, Dan served on the NHA Board of Directors and brought his talents as a photographer and storyteller to Health Science magazine, where he interviewed and photographed countless members for the beloved “People” column. A familiar and uplifting presence at NHA conferences, Dan inspired attendees with his personal story of transformation—from the pressures and stress of corporate life to a lifestyle centered on health, balance, and purpose. His warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine encouragement left a lasting impression on all who knew him.


Irving & Ruth Schoenfeld

Irving and Ruth were dedicated Life Members of the ANHS. They joined the ANHS in 1956 and attended numerous ANHS/NHA Conferences where Irving was a legendary and beloved youth leader who entertained children of all ages by playing games with them, taking them swimming and hiking while their parents attended lectures. Irving had a passion for life and enjoyed cycling, hiking, swimming, dancing and, especially tennis, winning gold and silver medals in the Senior Olympics. He also served as a staff member of the ANHS Children’s Camp and was an active member of the Miami Chapter.

Ruth was also a devoted member of the Miami Chapter where she served as president and made significant contributions to the chapter’s leadership and programs. She was also a contributing author to Health Science magazine, further supporting the dissemination of natural hygiene principles.

Irving passed away on January 21, 2009, just three months shy of his 92nd Birthday. Ruth passed away in 2013, just three months shy of her 96th Birthday.

Susan Taylor

Susan Taylor is Professor Emerita of Dance at the University of Tampa, where she was the longtime director of the dance program. Susan was an important part of the NHA in the 1990s. She was the Associate Editor of Health Science, where she won numerous awards for writing and editing. She played an important role at NHA Conferences and was the co-editor of two important NHA books, The Natural Hygiene Handbook and The Natural Hygiene Diet. In addition to her work with the Association, Susan has been part of the editorial teams for books by Drs. Alan Goldhamer, Frank Sabatino, and Joel Fuhrman.

Richard Wangler

Richard was a devoted ANHS Life Member who joined the Society in 1950 and remained actively involved for decades. He later served on the ANHS Board of Directors, contributing his time, insight, and leadership to further the organization’s mission. Richard was especially engaged at the grassroots level, playing an important role in local Natural Hygiene communities in Buffalo, New York, and Port Charlotte, Florida. Through his commitment, he helped educate and inspire others, fostering a deeper understanding of health and natural living in the communities he served. He passed away at age 96.
