In today’s rapidly evolving world, the voices of young activists are more crucial than ever. Organizations like The Raven Corps are at the forefront, harnessing the energy and passion of youth to drive social, economic, and environmental justice. Founded in 2016 under the leadership of Claire Howell, The Raven Corps has emerged as a ray of hope and action for those seeking to create a more compassionate and sustainable planet.
In a recent episode of the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Onyx Helper, a dedicated member of The Raven Corps, shared their inspiring journey into youth activism. This episode highlights Onyx’s involvement with The Raven Corps and their efforts in promoting social, economic, and environmental justice through the lens of veganism.
Introduction to Onyx Helper and Raven Corps
Onyx Helper is a passionate youth activist and a key member of The Raven Corps. Initially known as Youth for the Voiceless, The Raven Corps has grown into a national movement, providing a platform for young people to drive meaningful change.
Onyx’s Path to Veganism
Onyx recounted their journey towards veganism, which began in 2020 during the global pandemic. Interestingly, Onyx was working at a meat shop at the time. The isolation of the pandemic allowed for deep reflection on dietary choices and the ethical implications of consuming animal products. This introspection led Onyx to adopt a vegan lifestyle, motivated by a desire to reduce animal suffering and promote environmental sustainability.
The Digital Activism of Raven Corps
The Raven Corps operates primarily in the digital space, utilizing platforms like Discord to connect its members across the United States. This digital-first approach enables a robust and active community where young activists can collaborate on campaigns and share ideas. The online nature of the organization ensures inclusivity and accessibility, empowering youth from various backgrounds to participate in their initiatives.
The Mind Over Milk Campaign
One of the key topics discussed in the podcast was the Mind Over Milk campaign, a major initiative led by The Raven Corps. As the campaign coordinator, Onyx explained the campaign’s focus on addressing the detrimental impacts of the dairy industry.
Mind Over Milk aims to educate the public about the environmental harm, animal cruelty, and health issues associated with dairy consumption. The campaign also advocates for legislative changes, such as the Add Soy Act, which would require schools to provide non-dairy milk alternatives.
Onyx emphasized the intersectionality of the campaign, highlighting how it addresses issues of animal rights, human health, and environmental justice. The campaign seeks to empower students to advocate for better food choices in their schools and challenge the dominance of the dairy industry in the National School Lunch Program.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
Despite the significant obstacles posed by the dairy industry’s influence, The Raven Corps remains determined to drive change. Onyx shared their experiences with grassroots activism, including leafleting and tabling at schools, and the positive reactions they have received from the public. However, they acknowledged the need for a broader strategic approach to achieve lasting impact.
The Raven Corps is continuously exploring new directions for their campaigns, aiming to address various forms of oppression and promote collective liberation. Onyx discussed potential future initiatives, such as examining the links between prisons and slaughterhouse labor, which reflect the organization’s commitment to comprehensive social justice.
Fostering a Joyful Activism Community
A unique aspect of Raven Corps is the emphasis on joy and camaraderie within the activist community. Recognizing the potential for burnout, The Raven Corps ensures that its members find joy and support in their work. This approach not only sustains the activists’ energy but also aligns with their vision of creating a compassionate and equitable world.
The Ongoing Role of Youth and Activism
Onyx Helper’s appearance on the Health Science Podcast sheds light on the vital role of youth activism in addressing today’s pressing issues. Through their work with The Raven Corps, Onyx exemplifies the power of young people to effect change and promote a more sustainable, compassionate world. The Mind Over Milk campaign and other initiatives by The Raven Corps are testament to the organization’s dedication to collective liberation and justice.
