Exploring Lifestyle Medicine with Dr. Meagan L. Grega
In this insightful episode of the Health Science Podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino sits down with Dr. Meagan L. Grega, a board-certified physician in Family and Lifestyle Medicine and the Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Kellyn Foundation. Their conversation delves into the transformative power of lifestyle medicine, the role of community-driven health initiatives, and the importance of making sustainable wellness choices accessible to all.
Dr. Grega’s journey into lifestyle medicine began with a lifelong passion for service and well-being. She graduated summa cum laude from Bucknell University with a B.S. in Biochemistry/Cell Biology and earned her MD from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. After medical school, she served as a medical officer in the United States Navy, where she developed a deep understanding of preventive care and community health. Her career has since evolved into a leadership role in Lifestyle Medicine, where she works to educate both patients and medical professionals on the importance of evidence-based lifestyle interventions.
She is the Managing Director of Llantrisant Retreat and Wellness Center and actively serves as faculty for St. Luke’s University Health Network and Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Grega is a Fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the Conference Chair for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Annual Meeting. She is also a member of the governing boards for both the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Her work is deeply rooted in the belief that sustainable lifestyle changes can prevent and reverse chronic disease, transforming individual and community health.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Grega emphasizes that the health choices we make are often influenced by our social environment and the accessibility of healthy options. This insight led to the creation of the Kellyn Foundation’s Healthy Neighborhood Immersion Strategy, a community-based approach designed to make the healthy choice the easy choice. By integrating school-based education, gardening programs, mobile markets, and hands-on cooking classes, the foundation empowers families to embrace nutritious food and active living in a way that feels natural and sustainable.
One of the most compelling aspects of the discussion revolves around social nudges and choice architecture—the ways in which our surroundings shape our behaviors. Dr. Grega explains that people are far more likely to adopt healthy habits when those around them are doing the same. Whether it’s through workplace wellness initiatives, school programs, or community-driven food access efforts, creating an environment that fosters well-being makes all the difference. This principle is at the heart of Kellyn Foundation’s work, particularly in schools, where children are introduced to real food, gardening, and nutrition education at an early age, helping to establish lifelong healthy habits.
However, education alone isn’t enough if families don’t have access to fresh, wholesome foods. This is where the Eat Real Food Mobile Market comes in. Recognizing that many areas in the Lehigh Valley are classified as food deserts, the Kellyn Foundation established this initiative to bring farm-fresh produce and plant-based meals directly to underserved neighborhoods. Dr. Grega highlights how the mobile market serves as a bridge, connecting local farmers with families in need while fostering a deeper understanding of where food comes from and how it nourishes the body. She stresses that health equity must go beyond just information—it requires real solutions that remove barriers and provide tangible access to better nutrition.
Another critical aspect of their work is the integration of culinary medicine, which goes beyond prescribing dietary changes to actively teaching individuals how to prepare and enjoy plant-based meals. Through hands-on cooking classes, the foundation helps families build confidence in the kitchen, making healthy eating practical and enjoyable rather than overwhelming. This approach not only improves dietary habits but also strengthens family connections and cultural traditions around food.
Dr. Grega also touches on the broader landscape of lifestyle medicine and its role in the future of healthcare. She is actively involved in training the next generation of physicians through medical school and residency programs, ensuring that new doctors understand the power of lifestyle interventions. By integrating lifestyle medicine into medical education, she hopes to shift the focus of healthcare from reactive treatments to proactive wellness strategies.
As the conversation wraps up, Dr. Grega shares her hopes for the future—expanding access to medically tailored meals, increasing insurance coverage for lifestyle interventions, and continuing to strengthen community relationships. Her passion for making health accessible and sustainable is evident, and her work is a testament to the profound impact that community-driven efforts can have on public health.
The episode serves as an inspiring reminder that true health transformation happens not just on an individual level, but within the fabric of our communities. By addressing food access, education, and lifestyle choices collectively, we can create a healthier, more resilient society for generations to come.
