The gut is often called our “second brain,” and for good reason. It influences everything from digestion and immunity to mood and long-term health. In a special guest-hosted episode of NHA Today, Chuck Carroll, host of The Exam Room Podcast from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), sat down with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz—better known as The Gut Health MD—to explore what it really takes to build a healthy gut and why the conversation goes far beyond acid reflux.

Rethinking Heartburn and Reflux

When most people think of gut problems, heartburn and GERD often come to mind. Supermarket shelves are filled with over-the-counter solutions, and millions of Americans rely on prescription medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

But Dr. B explains that reflux is not really an acid problem—it’s a motility problem. The esophagus is designed to move food in one direction: from mouth to stomach. When motility breaks down, stomach contents flow backward, irritating the esophagus and causing symptoms like burning, coughing, or even dental erosion.

This means the long-term solution isn’t simply neutralizing acid but restoring proper gut function and motility.

The Risks of Overmedication

While medications like PPIs can bring short-term relief, Dr. B cautions against chronic use. Stomach acid plays an essential role in digestion and in maintaining balance in the gut microbiome. Long-term suppression of acid can disrupt this balance, leading to bacterial overgrowth, malabsorption, and other downstream problems.

Instead of covering up symptoms indefinitely, he encourages people to look at the root causes of reflux and other digestive conditions.

The Power of Food and Fiber

So where does healing begin? In the food we eat. 🌱

A diet rich in fiber from whole plant foods not only promotes regularity but also supports the trillions of microbes that live in our digestive system. These microbes play a critical role in maintaining motility, repairing the gut lining, and preventing inflammation.

Dr. B points to studies showing that a plant-forward Mediterranean-style diet can be just as effective as medication in reducing reflux symptoms. By emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes, people can create conditions where the gut thrives naturally.

Beyond Diet: Stress, Sleep, and Movement

Gut health is about much more than food. The conversation also highlights the powerful connections between the gut and the brain.

  • Stress puts the body in “sympathetic overdrive,” disrupting digestion and promoting reflux.
  • Sleep is essential for recovery and gut repair, and alcohol or poor lifestyle habits can throw off circadian rhythms.
  • Exercise supports digestion and motility, whether it’s walking after meals, practicing yoga, or strength training.

As Dr. B explains, these pillars of lifestyle medicine all work together to create a strong foundation for gut health.

Community and Support

Healing can sometimes feel isolating, but community matters. Dr. B has created the Gut Health Collective, a space where people can learn, share experiences, and support one another. With Q&A sessions, challenges, and educational resources, it’s a place where gut healing becomes a shared journey.

Plant Powered Plus: A Glimpse Ahead

Dr. B also previewed his upcoming book, Plant Powered Plus, which focuses on reducing inflammation through nutrition and lifestyle. From dietary strategies to circadian rhythm alignment and gut-brain science, the book offers a comprehensive guide for anyone looking to optimize health from the inside out.

Why It Matters

The conversation on NHA Today reminds us that gut health is whole-body health. From preventing reflux to lowering cancer risk, from improving energy to boosting immunity, the gut plays a central role in our long-term well-being.

By focusing on whole food, plant-based nutrition, stress management, movement, and community, we can transform not only digestion but overall health and vitality.
