What happens when your personal health crisis becomes your life’s purpose? For Anthony Masiello, founder of Lifestyle Telemedicine, that question is not rhetorical. It is the story of his life.
And it started with a letter that told him his body was a bad bet.
In 2005, Anthony was 33 years old, working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and expecting his second son. He applied for a 20-year term life insurance policy. The response came back: denied. For a data scientist who understood exactly what that meant, that the actuarial model had calculated he was unlikely to survive the next 20 years, it landed like a death sentence.
In this episode of NHA Today, Dr. Stephan Esser sits down with Anthony to trace what happened next: 160 pounds lost, blood pressure medication reversed, marathons run, mountains hiked, and an organization built that is now helping thousands of people do the same thing he did.

The Letter That Changed Everything
Anthony describes the moment clearly. His wife was pregnant with their second son. He was 33, working at a pharmaceutical company of all places, surrounded by data about how the body works and how disease is managed. He applied for a 20-year term life insurance policy. Standard procedure for a growing family.
The company took his health data, ran it through their actuarial model, and came back with one word: denied. For someone who understood exactly how those models worked, what it meant when a company calculated that paying out on your policy was more likely than collecting 20 years of premiums… it was devastating.
He weighed 360 pounds. He had high blood pressure managed by medication. He had been diagnosed with sleep apnea. He was a vegetarian and had not had a drink since 1994. He thought he was doing the right things. The letter said otherwise.
That was his rock bottom. Not because things couldn’t have been worse, they could have. But it was the moment he decided that enough was enough and he was going to figure out how to actually get healthy.
The Shift That Made the Difference
For most of his adult life, Anthony had been trying to lose weight. He had been overweight since childhood. He had tried. The insurance denial changed the question.
He stopped searching for how to lose weight. He started searching for how to get healthy.
That shift led him to Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Eat to Live on Amazon in early 2006. The cover promised fast and sustained weight loss. But when he read the reviews, people were not talking about weight loss. They were talking about getting off medications. Feeling better. Recovering from disease. The weight loss, they said, was almost a side effect.
That was the epiphany. He did not want to lose weight. He wanted to be around for his family. He wanted to be healthy. If the weight came off in the process, wonderful. But the goal had changed, and that change in goal changed everything.
The Lifestyle Medicine Transformation: 160 Pounds in 20 Months
Anthony spent about a year really finding his groove with the Nutritarian approach. He made accidental mistakes along the way. He was learning something completely new. But he built his meals around what Dr. Fuhrman calls G-BOMBS: greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, and seeds. He ate more vegetables and fruit than he had ever imagined possible. And he started seeing results quickly.
From the day he bought the book to the day his son Henry was born, about eight weeks, he lost 35 pounds. He had not even started exercising yet. The momentum that created was unlike anything he had experienced before. His mind went from “I’m stuck” to “this is working, and what is the next eight weeks going to bring?”
He averaged about eight pounds a month over the next 20 months. He lost 160 pounds in total. Before he had even finished losing the weight, his doctor was monitoring his blood pressure so closely that she was bringing him in weekly to make sure she did not over-medicate him as his numbers improved. She eventually took him off his medications entirely.
He had not seen a doctor prescribe lifestyle before. He had only seen medication. And here was his body, without surgery, without drugs, doing what all that data said it could do.
From Fear to Purpose
Anthony talks about two distinct emotional phases of his transformation. The first was driven by fear. Fear of what kind of father he would be. Fear of what kind of husband. Fear of not being there. It was dark and it was effective… for a while.
But as the weight came off and the medications went away, the emotional fuel shifted. He went skateboarding. He started running with his wife. An elderly woman walking her dog had once passed him on the running trail. Now he was running half marathons. Then marathons. Then trail races. Then mountain hikes.
The fear was replaced by excitement. Not about escaping a bad life, but about building a remarkable one. And that excitement, he says, carried him so much further than fear ever had. It still carries him now. He has not had ice cream or cheese since 2005. Not because he is disciplined. Because he genuinely does not want them.
His identity transformed along with his body. He had always tested as an introvert. He retook the Myers-Briggs test for work and came out as an extrovert. The confidence that came from proving to himself that he could break through what felt like permanent limitations — that confidence expanded into every area of his life.
What Is Lifestyle Telemedicine?
Anthony’s transformation eventually led him out of healthcare technology and into building the kind of care he had never been able to access when he needed it most.
Lifestyle Telemedicine is a nationwide telemedicine organization that provides lifestyle medicine care — helping patients address the root causes of chronic disease through nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle interventions. The goal is to make this kind of care as accessible as possible, reaching people who do not have a lifestyle medicine physician in their city or who cannot access this approach through their existing insurance.
His vision is the same one that drives the NHA: that the standard default for managing chronic disease should be lifestyle first, and medication when necessary — not the other way around.
