It was significant that the city of New York, where the Natural Hygiene Movement was established and where Rev. Dr. Sylvester Graham delivered his initial lectures, served as the location for the re-establishment of a national society on June 28, 1948. Dr. Shelton played a key role in this initiative.
Dr. Herbert Shelton, Dr. William Esser, Dr. Christopher Gian-Cursio, Dr. Gerald Benesh, Dr. Jesse Mercer Gehman, Jack Dunn Trop, Irving Davidson, and Symon Gould were at the historic meeting and are considered the founders. Initially, the organization was named the American Physiological and Hygienic Society. Following the tradition of a century earlier, a convention was held in April 1949, during which the organization’s name was changed to the American Natural Hygiene Society.”
The Seeds are Planted…
1944: Jack Dunn Trop and Irving Davidson formed a small yet passionate group, meeting regularly in the office of an insurance agent named Norman Osborn. They called themselves the New York Natural Hygiene Society. One day, during a conversation, Trop proposed an exciting idea to Irving: why not expand their efforts and create a national organization? He was inspired by the memory of a national Natural Hygiene Society that had existed in the 1840s, and he saw an opportunity to revive and build upon that legacy. The two of them drafted a letter to Dr. Herbert M. Shelton, the leading modern advocate of Natural Hygiene, suggesting the creation of a national society. Shelton responded enthusiastically, offering his expertise and financial support: “Okay. If you do, I’ll finance it and manage all the organizational tasks.” This marked a pivotal moment in the movement’s history, setting the stage for establishing a more extensive and influential network dedicated to the principles of Natural Hygiene. With Dr. Shelton’s guidance and resources, their vision began to take shape, laying the foundation for a national movement that would inspire countless individuals to embrace healthier, more holistic lifestyles.
1946: Irving Davidson and Jack Dunn Trop founded the Graham Natural Hygiene Society in New York City, a local group dedicated to promoting holistic health principles. The name “Graham” pays tribute to Rev. Dr. Sylvester Graham, America’s pioneering advocate for healthy living through a balanced approach to diet, exercise, sleep, hygiene, appropriate clothing, and the healthy expression of sexuality, emotions, and mental well-being.

And so it begins…
1948: Dr. Herbert Shelton, along with attorney Irving Davidson and esteemed doctors William Esser, Christopher Gian-Cursio, Gerald Benesh, and Jesse Mercer Gehman, as well as film producer Jack Dunn Trop and publicist Symon Gould, came together to establish the American Natural Hygiene Society. Shelton was unanimously elected as the first president, driving a powerful movement. Through dedicated educational initiatives, the Society successfully reignited the Hygienic revolution, empowering thousands to embrace and apply the transformative principles of Natural Hygiene. This organization evolved into the National Health Association in 1998 and continues its mission to promote health and well-being for all.
1948 (until 1952): Dr. Herbert Shelton served as president of the American Natural Hygiene Society.

1949: ANHS holds its first National Convention at the Diplomat Hotel in New York City, April 24th-30th. Dr. Shelton was elected the first ANHS President. Symon Gould was pivotal in organizing and promoting key events. He arranged special classes led by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton, a renowned figure in the natural hygiene movement. Also, he coordinated a distinguished lecture by Dr. Shelton at the prestigious Roosevelt Auditorium. Collaborating with fellow activists Irving Davidson and J.D. Trop, Gould garnered significant media attention, securing widespread newspaper coverage. He also facilitated a radio address by Dr. Shelton, amplifying the reach of their message and further solidifying the ANHS’s presence in the public sphere. Through his strategic efforts, Gould helped elevate the movement, making it more accessible to a broader audience and advancing the cause of natural hygiene.

1952: One of Jack Dunn Trop’s most remarkable achievements was the creation of The Greatest Adventure. This groundbreaking historical film chronicled the inspiring stories of individuals whose lives were transformed through the principles of Natural Hygiene. The film, which quickly became a classic, was the first to focus on health and wellness in a profound and cinematic way. Drawing upon insights from his influential book Help Yourself to Health and the movie The Greatest Adventure, he honored the pioneering work of health reformers such as Dr. Russell Thacker Trall, Dr. Isaac Jennings, and Reverend Dr. Sylvester Graham. This film, for the first time, brought the “unusual’ message of Natural Hygiene to hundreds of thousands of TV viewers nationwide. In the film. Dr. Herbert M. Shelton and Dr. Christopher Gian-Cursio announced to the world that the only natural diet of man was the raw fruits, vegetables, and nuts displayed before them. The popular mistaken concept is that we cannot gain strength and build resistance without eating. So long as this illusion persists, thousands will go to premature graves. Food and nutrition are not synonymous. You are not nourished by the food you eat, but in proportion to the amount you digest and assimilate. Throughout history, men and women have fasted and regained health, peace of mind, and a new way of life. The preservation of life depends on a system of living the right way. Fasting is only one phase of this system. When used properly and supervised by a qualified person, fasting can save your life.
